Kickass, the doorstop dog, is not among those dogs that cower under the bed when fireworks start booming, but he sympathizes with them and says that “under the bed” is not a bad place to be if you have some emotional issue to work through.
The keeper, for example: he is so old that he remembers the explosions of firecrackers from before World War II, and therefore, along with hearing the ancient banging, he remembers those countless wonderful people who were there at the time but have since gone over the big hill. A little time under the bed might bring some new clarity to those old faces.
On the other hand, the keeper was born the last year the Ford Model A was produced, and he needs to think how few of them are still on the road; and so the fact that he can still hear firecrackers is to be celebrated and is not something that should send him under the bed.
Happy 4th of July!
